Night at the Nest Overview
Night at the Nest is a tradition that started at South Hunterdon High School in 2009. The event is a school wide activity that includes both creative dance, and relay race components. But it includes so much more. Students have the opportunity to work together to achieve a team goal, encourage school spirit, and produce a final product that makes everyone involved feel proud to have been a part of it all.
In the winter months the entire high school student body is divided into two teams, a Blue team and a Steel team, the years theme is announced, and the ball starts rolling. The team members then vote for their captains. Each team will have a Senior Boy and Senior Girl Color Captain to lead their team, and a Boy and Girl captain to represent each grade (9-12). Captains are instrumental in working together to lead their teams. Practices take place for each team to brainstorm, plan, learn, and practice their 10 minute dance. The dance section must follow the dance guidelines. Practices continue once or twice a week and take place in the evenings (after extra-curricular activities). As March approaches the pressure is on, and both teams work hard to complete and perfect their dance, props, costumes, and decorations. In the weeks leading up to the event each team gets a chance to have a few trial runs in the unique relay races. Relay races range from rolling trashcans holding teammates, to diving for the football against an opponent.
In 2010 the tradition to make team Murals started. Each team designs, paints, and displays their original artwork in the Gymnasium for the weekend of Night at the Nest.
All this preparation leads up to a performance that everyone will remember.
Be part of the tradition.
