Class Materials and Preparation:

Students are responsible for bringing the following materials to class EACH day: textbook (covered), binder (3 ring binder recommended) with notebook paper, pen, pencil and due assignments.  Students will be considered unprepared for class if their necessary class materials are not in their possession at the beginning of each class.

Class Assignments Policy:

Homework, laboratory reports, and other class assignments are an important part of your overall grade.  Assignments will be collected at the BEGINNING of class on the day they are due.  An assignment not handed in at this time will be considered late.  Students will earn ZERO POINTS for late assignments.  Students that are present in school but are unable to attend class (e.g. field trip, early dismissal for sporting event, etc.) are responsible for handing in the assignment due that day.  If the assignment is not turned in before the regularly scheduled class time, the student will earn ZERO POINTS.

Students who are absent will have two days to make up the work.  This means that you may be required to turn in missed work on a day in which you do not have this class.

Students will have ONE WEEK to make up a laboratory.  It is the student’s responsibility to arrange a time to make up the laboratory that was missed.

Grading Policy:

The grade you earn will be based on the following areas:

            Tests/ Quizzes                               40%

            Laboratory/Group Work            25%

            Homework Assignments            20%

            Projects                                            15%

Classroom Behavior and Expectations

Classroom time is extremely valuable.  I expect each student to utilize this time to learn and complete the required work.  The following rules have been created to ensure that the amount of learning time is maximized and that all students have the opportunity to fully benefit from this class.

1.     Always give every task your best effort.

2.     Respect and cooperate with all other people in the class.

3.     Always raise your hand to participate in discussions, ask questions, or if you need help.

4.     During tests, quizzes, and independent work, work quietly at your desk until ALL students are finished.

5.     During group and lab work, voices are to be kept low and discussions are ONLY in regard to the work at hand.

Hall Passes

A hall pass may be used for students to go to the bathroom, go to their locker, or get a drink.  Students may use a hall pass ONE time per week.  Only one student may use a hall pass at a time and should not be gone for more than 3 minutes.  Keep in mind that the use of the hall pass is a privilege. If I notice excessive use or abuse of the hall pass, I will restrict or eliminate its use during class.  Class time is valuable and by leaving the classroom you may miss important information.

Detention

An after school detention will be assigned to students who commit a severe violation or who repeatedly disregard my warnings.  Detention will be held from 2:50 to 3:50 in A-104.  Failure to show up for or removal from my detention will result in office detention

Food and Drinks

Food and drink are not permitted in the science room during regular class time.  All food found in the science room will be confiscated and thrown away.

***I believe that everyone in this class has the ability to be successful.  By following this course guide and consistently trying your best, you will learn science and EARN a grade that reflects your efforts.***

I understand that science can be challenging and even confusing at times.  I feel it is important that you ask questions if you do not understand something or need me explain a concept further.

I am available before school, after school and during unit lunch for extra help.  Please do not hesitate to see me if you have any questions or concerns.  Come see me to arrange a meeting time.  You can also reach me via email:  amy.randazzo@shrhs.org.

Have a great year!!
