What textbooks are used?
Ven Conmigo for Spanish II and III, Conversación y Repaso and Literatura y Arte for IV and Conversación y Repaso and ??? AP for Spanish V.
How often do you give homework and how long should it take?
In Spanish II and III, homework is given 4 times per week and should take about 5-10 minutes each night. In Spanish IV and V, assignments are more intense but given less frequently, usually two nights per week and often reading assignments.
What concepts are covered?
Spanish II: Students in II are already able to form sentences completely in the present tense. This year they will also learn the past and future tenses in addition to increasing their vocabulary. They will be able to hold conversations on common and well-known topics.
Spanish III is the most grammar-intensive year in the program. The students will be able to conjugate regular and irregular verbs in 17 forms by the end of this year. They will also expand their vocabulary and their speaking abilities.
Spanish IV reviews basic concepts and focuses mostly on mastery of these skills through reading authentic texts and conversation.
Spanish V is an intensive review that covers prior topics as thoroughly as possible while enhancing all of the skills covered on the AP exam. These include reading comprehension, listening skills, sentence completion, error recognition, writing, and speaking.
How often are quizzes and tests given?
Generally, students may expect one quiz per week and one test per month.
What is your grading scale?
Grades are based upon three things: participation, homework completion, and graded assignments. The emphasis on participation increases with the student’s level. (20-10-70, 20-10-70, 25-10-65, 25-10-65). Letter grades are determined by the school’s grading scale.
What kinds of assignments do you give?
Students in all levels regularly perform skits/ presentations, write short essays, create (video) projects, do book and worksheet activities, practice with communicative activities, submit classwork on occasion, and play review games.
What other activities do you usually do in a class period?
We begin class with a warm-up activity, checking homework, and reviewing vocabulary with flashcards. Technology is incorporated regularly and students do practice activities in the computer lab once or twice per month.
What are your policies on retakes, making up homework, and extra credit?
Students may retake any quiz for the average of the two scores if and only if all of their homework assignments are completed. Homework is accepted late for half credit until the second to last week of the marking period. Students may earn up to 5 points per marking period added onto their lowest score from the marking period by completing online activities that may be found on my school’s website: www1.shrhs.org/~emily.neubauer
What behavioral expectations do you have for my child?
I expect students to arrive on time, to speak appropriately and when it is appropriate, and to ask permission to leave their seats. Students may only use the bathroom or go to their lockers if they ask before the bell rings to begin class.
