Art I
Art I is a full year class open to students in grades 9-12.
In the first semester, students will learn the Elements and Principles of Design and complete a unit of study in drawing. Materials used include pencil, pen & ink, and charcoal. Students will see and read about a variety of artists including surrealists Rene Magritte and Salvador Dali.
In the second semester, students concentrate on color theory and painting. They will complete several color exercises, an abstract acrylic painting and a watercolor landscape.
The third marking period is dedicated to ceramics. Students learn hand-building techniques, glazing and the basics of how clay works. Inspiration is provided by Native American potters such as Maria Martinez.
Sculpture is the focus of the fourth marking period. Students study 19th and 20th century trends in sculpture and visit Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton, NJ. Projects include a mixed media figural piece, a mobile and a found object sculpture.
